I wonder if my coworkers will be pleased that I recently learned that Oracle has pretty good support for regular expressions in queries. This means two things, more or less:

1) The time it takes me to write complex queries has just decreased by orders of magnitude. For example, what used to be a multi-thousand line query is now a couple hundred, and

2) That everyone else in the building can no longer differentiate the output of /dev/urandom and my latest report source code.

Supposedly, I'm an Information Systems Programmer. That's supposed to mean I work with SQL all day long, and occasionally a desktop or web language. My job is to make other people's jobs easier.

So why does my desk contain an oscilloscope, soldering iron, various pieces of television broadcast equipment in various states of assembly, studio lighting, evaporative cooler parts, and random Cisco gear?

I really wish I knew, too. I just got finished rebuilding a 3-phase motor. Next up is service on the huge UPS.

Then, I get to open my editor, and there's a full day's worth of software engineering for me. (Have I mentioned it's 6:30PM?)

My journal uses a custom font, I think it's pretty. If you don't already have it, download the Kristen ITC font.
